Something Seems Off: Possible Mental Health Issues in a Student

The CFI is the cornerstone of aviation safety. But what if safety flags go up with a student? This informal roundtable explores situations where a CFI is concerned that a learner seems “off” and it may affect safety, but the pilot insists everything is fine. Pushing the pilot to another instructor or flight school does not help a real issue. This interactive session explores using a structured awareness and mitigation plan by understanding the concept, creating a common language, applying it to situations, employing active risk management, and documenting progress.

John Boos is a DPE, Gold Seal CFI, CFII, MEI, 3-time NAFI Master CFI, and former chief instructor at a Part 61 flight school. Boos started flying in 2013 and was hooked on aviation from the first lesson. In 2016, he transitioned from electronic engineering to full-time flight instruction. Boos enjoys giving FAA practical tests as a DPE. He promotes safety through WINGS recurrent training to local pilots. He has mentored CFIs and creates original content for FAAST Team presentations. He has written several articles for NAFI’s Mentor magazine and presented at NAFI Summits and EAA AirVenture. He is an active Lifeline Pilots pilot and volunteers flights to and from medical care. In his spare time, he and his wife enjoy traveling to fun destinations in their Piper Turbo Arrow. He is an active amateur radio operator and enjoys Morse code, which is handy for VORs and localizers.
