Title:
ALARMS And Managing Unexpected Events
Topic:
Human Factors and Decision Making
Date and Time:
Saturday, August 8, 2026, starting at 09:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Craig Patterson
Brief Description:

How do you prepare and deal with human startle response and managing unexpected events?  The startle response is a defensive response to sudden or threatening stimuli, such as sudden noise or sharp movement, and is associated with negative affects. The reliability in modern technically advanced aircraft has created an undesirable conditioning of pilots to expect that things will not go wrong. When things do go
wrong, it can be a surprise and affect the way a pilot thinks or acts. At this FAASTeam event we will explore the startle reflex and how to manage the unexpected when it occurs.  We will also have an awkward conversation on Service Bulletins for the Airworthiness topic.
