Title:
NAFI 2026 - From Certification to Confidence - Building CFIs Ready to Teach
Topic:
Learn How to Convert Foundational Knowledge, Including FOI, Into Observable, Effective Teaching Behaviors
Date and Time:
Tuesday, July 21, 2026, starting at 10:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Chris Sorenson
Brief Description:

Initial flight instructor certification validates knowledge and flight proficiency but does not always ensure the development of practical teaching effectiveness of candidates. As a result, many new CFIs enter the trade technically prepared, yet under-equipped to teach, adapt, and respond to a student’s needs in real time. When developing instructor candidates, maximizing the value of every training opportunity is critical. Drawing from experience teaching aviation pedagogy and mentoring flight instructor candidates at Eastern Michigan University, this session focuses not just on flight training itself, but on improving how instructors are trained to deliver it. Using proven methods and practical techniques to develop instructor candidates, attendees will learn how to convert foundational knowledge, including FOI, into observable, effective teaching behaviors in new flight instructor applicants.
