Title:
Avoiding Pilot Deviations
Topic:
Preventing Pilot Deviations: In the Air and On the Ground
Speaker(s):
Major Mike Banner, CAP Standards Evaluation Officer/Instructor Pilot/Check Pilot Examiner
Brief Description:
Accidents attributed to pilot deviations. How deviations can lead to accidents. A deviation can occur during airborne (in flight) or surface (on the ground) operations. Types of deviations may include: flying above or below an assigned altitude without clearance; straying outside lateral boundaries of an assigned heading or route; taxiing onto an active runway without authorization; misinterpreting an instrument approach or procedure.
Discussion includes types of deviations on the ground and in the air. Handouts providing detailed information on how to avoid Pilot Deviations.
Good practices to help avoid pilot deviations:
- Before you fly, use all available information to plan your flight. Make sure the information comes from up to date, appropriate sources.
- While you are flying, stay focused on the task at hand. Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate....in that order! Work on flying accurately.
- Keeping up to date, by maintaining both knowledge and flight proficiency through the FAASAFETY WINGS Program
