Title:
EAA Chapter 129 VMC Club Meeting
Topic:
Decision Making on Short Final – The Go-Around and Beyond
Date and Time:
Saturday, April 11, 2026, starting at 09:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Doug Reeves
Brief Description:

Join us for an interactive safety discussion centered on a cross-country VFR flight into a private airfield. While the cruise portion of this flight is routine, the transition from the descent to the landing phase presents sudden environmental challenges that test a pilot’s stabilized approach criteria. Receive WINGS credit for attending.

Key Discussion Points:

  • Environmental Awareness: Analyzing the gap between reported surface winds and actual conditions encountered on a localized approach.
  • The "Go/No-Go" Posture: Managing the mental shift from a planned landing to a rejected approach.
  • Strategic Diversion: Evaluating fuel state, runway requirements, and pilot fatigue when deciding whether to re-enter the pattern or proceed to an alternate.

The purpose of EAA Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) Clubs is to promote recreational flying, proficiency, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share information, provide recognition, foster communications, promote safety, and build proficiency in VFR day and nighttime operations. EAA VMC Clubs are extensions to local EAA chapters and offer monthly VMC program meetings where pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences. Since 2017,  pilots have improved their proficiency through the EAA VMC club programs and they love it.
