Title:
Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) - Several Ways to Prevent it!
Topic:
Risk Management and Aeronautical Decision Making
Date and Time:
Saturday, April 4, 2026, starting at 09:00 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Richard Mend, CFI-AIM-ATP, FAAASTeam Rep
Brief Description:

Accidents occur when a fully functioning aircraft is unintentionally flown into terrain, water, or an obstacle. Despite advances in navigation technology and terrain awareness systems, CFIT accidents still occur and remain a serious safety concern in aviation.

Examine the factors that produce CFIT accidents, including loss of situational awareness, poor weather conditions, navigation errors, and decision-making breakdowns. Participants will review real-world accident scenarios and discuss practical techniques pilots can use to improve terrain awareness and avoid hazardous situations.

Special attention will be given to operating in reduced visibility, mountainous or rising terrain environments, and busy airspace where workload and distractions can increase risk. A good time to improve your awareness and get your questions answered as well!
