Title:
San Carlos Airport Association General Membership Meeting
Topic:
African Flying Safari
Date and Time:
Thursday, February 5, 2026, starting at 18:30 Pacific Standard Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Thomas Daniel, CFI
Brief Description:

The speaker shares details of his self-fly African safari, where he piloted a single-engine Cessna across South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. During the talk, he will discuss the practicalities of flying a light aircraft through some of most remote areas, the experience of landing on remote bush strips, and the logistics involved in planning a multi-country African expedition.

Safety concerns in this flying environment include, for example: when you are low on fuel, do you land and top off, or do you continue to your destination? The answer is simple when flying over California with hundreds of airports around and landing might cost only 15–30 minutes delay. It is a very different situation when landing may mean that you will not be able to take off again, not the same day, or maybe not even the same week. Or when not taking fuel may mean that you will land out in the middle of African savanna, with a real wildlife around.
