Title:
Michigan Aviation Safety Forum 2026 OPS Session 5
Topic:
Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT)
Date and Time:
Saturday, February 7, 2026, starting at 13:00 Eastern Standard Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Nick Tupper
Brief Description:

Don't be Fit to be tied - The most common type of pilot error in CFIT accidents is the pilot’s loss of situational awareness — failing to know at all times what the aircraft’s position is, how that position relates to the altitude of the surface immediately below and ahead, and how both relate to the course being flown.

Talking points:

  • Most CFIT Accidents involve Loss of outside references and Vertigo
  • CFIT accidents are not limited to any specific airman rating
  • Both IFR Rated and VFR rated pilots are at risk
  • Safety Enhancements recommended by the GAJSC can reduce the CFIT accident rate
  • Backup Instruments can save your life
  • Planning and flight condition response can reduce the risk

This presentation is planned for one hour.
