Title:
Hot Stuff! Lithium Battery Fires Prevent Recognize Respond Report
Topic:
Lithium Battery Fires
Speaker(s):
Roland Wahlroos-Ritter
Brief Description:
This is a in-person presentation on lithium battery fires in flight. Lithium batteries power nearly every device on today’s aircraft, from passenger PEDs and crew EFBs to medical and emergency equipment. Their high energy density, however, creates a unique fire risk through thermal runaways. This course prepares aircrew to prevent, recognize, and respond to lithium battery incidents in flight. Crews learn FAA-compliant procedures for extinguishing, cooling, and containing devices, coordinated cockpit–cabin communication, and post-event reporting requirements under NTSB and FAA regulations. Emphasizing vigilance, proper equipment use, and crew resource management, the training reinforces a simple priority: suppress flames, cool the source, contain safely, communicate clearly.
