Title:
Operating the Carbureted Aircraft Engine
Topic:
Pilot Resources and Tools for Operating Aircraft Engines Focusing on Carbureted-Lycoming and Continental Models.
Date and Time:
Wednesday, September 17, 2025, starting at 19:15 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Christopher Baye
Brief Description:

While most aviators have a good grasp of concepts of stick-and-rudder flying, the concepts of throttle-mixture-prop flying are somewhat more elusive. This presentation offers a guided tour of the often overlooked and commonly misunderstood resources available to the pilot, and explores the finer details of aircraft engine operation. We will discuss how the AFM/POH describes engine operation, and provide practical interpretations. We will explore supplementary information available from the engine manufacturers to help pilots achieve a richer understanding of their power plants. We will discuss basic and advanced engine instrumentation along with tips on interpretation and common misconceptions. We will discuss on-the-ground and in-the-air diagnostics to help the pilot communicate effectively with their A&P mechanic.
