Title:
NAFI 2025 - Teaching Risk Mitigation - At the PPC Education Center
Topic:
From 'No-Go' to Know-How: Teaching Risk Mitigation of External Factors Through Scenario-Based Training
Brief Description:
Many checkride applicants struggle to effectively recognize and manage risks associated with external pressures. Too often, their default response is an overly simplistic "I guess we won’t fly," which reflects a lack of preparation for more nuanced, real-world decision-making. External pressures—such as expectations from passengers, time constraints, or family waiting at the destination—require thoughtful assessment and practical mitigation strategies.
PRESENTED DURING THE EAA AIRVENTURE FLY-IN. NO FEE FOR THE NAFI PRESENTATIONS, BUT AN ENTRANCE FEE IS REQUIRED BY EAA AIRVENTURE TO ENTER THE GROUNDS.

John Boos is a NAFI Master Flight Instructor (third time), DPE, Gold Seal CFI, CFII, MEI, and FAASTeam Representative. He started flying in 2013 after a career in engineering and became an instructor in 2016. He enjoyed sharing his passion for aviation with students and mentoring instructors as Chief Instructor at a Part 61 flight school. He found the aviation office view from the cockpit to be much improved over the office view from a career in engineering. He and his wife have flown their Piper Arrow to Porland OR, the Bahamas, and to interesting places around the country.
NAFI would like to thank EAA for making the theater and space in the EAA Pilot Proficiency Center available for NAFI's presentations, member and pilot support during EAA AirVenture 2025.
NAFI is the National Association of Flight Instructors and is the largest association dedicated exclusively to flight instruction.
