Title:
NAFI 2025 - Shortcuts That Work - At the PPC Education Center
Topic:
Rules of Thumb - In-Flight Shortcuts That Work
Date and Time:
Monday, July 21, 2025, starting at 11:00 Central Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Rick Miller
Brief Description:

We commonly teach and use in-flight "rules of thumb" to quickly perform calculations. This presentation explores the one common mathematical foundation used in five popular shortcuts, including descent calculations, glideslope descent rate, visual descent point, and eights on pylons altitude. We'll present each rule of thumb’s practical application followed by a simple walk through of its underlying mathematical principles. The intent is to build pilot confidence by fostering a deeper understanding of these essential shortcuts. For instructors, it provides the crucial "why" behind the "how," enabling more effective and insightful explanations for students.

PRESENTED DURING THE EAA AIRVENTURE FLY-IN.  NO FEE FOR THE NAFI PRESENTATIONS, BUT AN ENTRANCE FEE IS REQUIRED BY EAA AIRVENTURE TO ENTER THE GROUNDS.

A pilot for 38 years, Rick Miller has been a flight instructor for the past 17.  He retired from a highly successful software management career over three years ago fully expecting to instruct part time to feed his “aviation addiction.”  Today, he enjoys an “encore career” as the Chief Flight Instructor for Lunken Flight Training Center (LFTC), a Part 141 and 61 flight school at historic Lunken Airport in Cincinnati Ohio.  LFTC provides collegiate-level flight instruction and is one of the region’s largest flight schools.  He currently instructs in the school’s 172s and for private clients in Beechcraft, Piper, Cessna, and Mooney aircraft.  Rick has over 1600 hours dual given and over 3200 hours in 25 different types of aircraft.  For the past 15 years, Rick has owned a 1961 Beechcraft Debonair.
