Title:
NWS Weather-Ready Nation FLYERS Icing Webinar
Topic:
Non-Convective Icing
Date and Time:
Thursday, December 19, 2024, starting at 18:00 Central Standard Time (16:00 PST; 17:00 MST; 19:00 EST; 14:00 HST; 15:00 AKST; 17:00 Arizona; Friday, December 20, 2024 00:00 GMT)
Speaker(s):
Aviation Weather Center, NWS-Kansas City, CWSU-Olathe,
Brief Description:

According to data from the NTSB, in-flight icing is a significant contributing factor in many general aviation accidents. Approximately 11% of weather-related general aviation accidents involve icing as a causal factor, resulting in around five fatalities each year. A crucial aspect of preventing icing accidents is a pilot's ability to recognize icing conditions, effectively plan flight routes to avoid these conditions, and take appropriate actions, such as changing altitude or diverting to a safer location.

This webinar will explore the weather processes that lead to icing conditions and equip pilots with the knowledge to adjust in-flight altitudes to avoid them. Presenters will also share a real-life icing situation faced by a general aviation pilot who safely reached the ground thanks to the support of ATC and CWSU forecasters. Lastly, participants will learn about various sources of icing information.

Who We Are: The Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) FLYERS (FLYing, Education, Resources, and Safety) are a collaborative team of aviation weather meteorologists from National Weather Service offices in the Kansas City metro region.

Vision: To support the general aviation community in becoming more resilient to hazardous weather.

Mission Statement: The WRN FLYERS provide aviation weather education and outreach to strengthen partnerships within the general aviation community. These education and outreach efforts promote safe and efficient flight to reduce the number of general aviation accidents. The WRN FLYERS also formally recognize NOAA aviation partners working to improve the nation’s readiness, responsiveness, and resilience to hazardous weather, water, and climate events.
