Title:
Lakeland Aviation Expo 2024 Forum - Flight Instructors - Do No Harm
Topic:
Flight Instructor Professionalism
Speaker(s):
Robert V. Meder
Brief Description:
This presentation will address the imperative that we in the flight training industry must endeavor to apply the same ethical, and, more importantly, the moral standards implied in the medical profession’s oath. Given that the general aviation accident rate has continued to improve over the years while, at the same time, the initial practical test failure rates have recently begun to soar, there will, inevitably, be a tragic intersection of the two curves. This has most likely resulted from economic pressures of the current pilot shortage encouraging flight training organizations to get new pilots to a position of “time building” as quickly as possible. In turn, individual instructors as well as those teaching at large flight schools are rushing to meet the minimum hiring standards in the “professional” aviation industry. In short, the incomplete training of flight instructors will result in a self-perpetuating downward spiral in the quality of instruction which will reduce aviation safety as a whole.

Presenter:
Robert V. Meder, Chairman Emeritus, National Association of Flight Instructors -
Robert “Bob” Meder completed his initial flight training in 1995 and earned his CFI in 2006. He went on to add single-engine and multi-engine instrument certificates. Recently he retired from a 40+ year career at a major railroad as the Director of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). While in this position, he worked directly with the FAA on regulatory issues for Drones and critical infrastructure companies. During this time, he continued to instruct.
Bob has over 6,000 hours of dual instruction and enjoys training new flight instructors, challenging them to recognize the distinction between skill and critical thinking. He emphasizes that superior risk management, not just skill, is the key to safe flight training. He is a FAASTeam Lead Rep at the St Louis FSDO and was honored as the district and regional flight instructor of the year in 2009 and 2010. After nearly ten years as chair, Bob currently serves as Chair Emeritus on the NAFI board of directors.
