Title:
Gifts From the Feds - WINGS and ASRS
Topic:
Why WINGS? How Do I Get Started? What is the value for pilots and CFIs? And, why file NASA ASRS reports when not “required?”
Date and Time:
Wednesday, January 18, 2023, starting at 19:30 Eastern Standard Time (16:30 PST; 17:30 MST; 18:30 CST; 14:30 HST; 15:30 AKST; 17:30 Arizona; Thursday, January 19, 2023 00:30 GMT)
Speaker(s):
Philip Mandel
Brief Description:

Two of the best gifts the federal government offers pilots are the FAA's WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program and NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS).  Sadly, they are two of the least understood.  Find out why you want to participate in these wonderful programs.  The presenter, Philip Mandel, promises to make it easy for you by providing specific examples of how to earn WINGS Phases and how (and why) to submit ASRS reports.

The objective of the WINGS Program is to address the primary accident causal factors that plague the general aviation community. By focusing on this objective, FAA hopes to reduce the number of accidents and incidents. It is not a simple “award” program but is instead a true proficiency program.

The "WINGS - Pilot Proficiency Program" is based on the premise that pilots who maintain currency and proficiency in the basics of flight will enjoy a safer and more stress-free flying experience. One potential bonus is that you can use your WINGS activities to obviate the need to have a flight review -- that's right, you may never need to take another flight review!

Instructors can benefit by using the WINGS program to obviate the need to do a Flight Instructor Refresher Clinic -- that's right, you may never need to take another FIRC!

And ASRS, oh my, the joys of filing reports regularly. Find out why!

Philip Mandel, CFI will walk us through the step-by-step process of selecting activities from the FAASafety.gov website - including type-specific activities - as well as how (and why) to file as many ASRS reports as your fingertips can manage.
