Title:
Review of VFR Flying Statistics
Topic:
Review of VFR flying based on material from the Joseph T. Nall report, which provides an analysis of General Aviation Accidents.
Date and Time:
Saturday, May 21, 2022, starting at 10:00 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
John Mahany
Brief Description:

John will review the 2019 Joseph T Nall Report, as it applied to general aviation, non-commercial flying. Starting out with non-commercial fixed wing, number of accidents and aircraft. Then how many were pilot related or mechanical, pilot certificate, and types of accidents, etc. Then it continues to break down accidents by landing and phase of flight. Then takeoff and climb accidents, fuel management, maneuvering accidents, etc. This should address most of the pilots in attendance, and everyone can benefit from a review like this, especially VFR pilots who don’t fly very often.

John Mahany is an ATP/CFI-AIMEG, and has type ratings in the CE-500, LR-JET, N-B25 and DC-3. He is also a 7-time Master CFI. Though he has been flying for 40+ years, he readily admits to still being a student of flying.
He has experience with corporate, airline and charter operations. He also spent 4 ½ years flying in Alaska, in the early 90’s, where he flew mostly single-pilot, for a small FAR 135 Operator. While there, he also joined the CAP and learned ‘bush’ and mountain flying techniques, and gained experience on floats and snow skis, as well.

From April 2004 until April 2020, he was a classroom and simulator instructor at FlightSafety Int’l in Long Beach, California. He is now an independent CFI and contract pilot, flying a Citation 2. He is actively involved in the southern California aviation community, and is an FAA FAASTeam Lead Rep. He is in a partnership in a 1953 Cessna 180 and owns a 1970 Cessna 150. Both are based at Long Beach Airport, KLGB.
