On average, there are several small airplane accidents every day – and not just around airports.
Over the last twenty years, small airplanes have changed tremendously and include features that could injure or kill a firefighter/EMT providing rescue.
The hazards contained in small airplane crashes are not obvious, even to ARFF trained personnel. These hazards can include:
Rocket powered ballistic parachutes,
Airbags contained within the seat belts,
Design materials (composites, titanium, etc.) and systems (oxygen, fuel, electrical systems, deicing etc.) unique in aircraft design
May be carrying medical samples, organs, toxic chemicals, weapons
Unique egress systems
And many more!
During this in-person seminar, first responders will be provided situational awareness information on the hazards discussed above. Following the presentation, we will have several aircraft on static display with pilots available to provide hands-on familiarization.
