Title:
July Topic of the Month - Stabilized Approaches and Landings
Topic:
Enhanced Flight Safety Through Stabilized Approaches and Landings
Date and Time:
Thursday, July 29, 2021, starting at 12:00 Eastern Daylight Time (09:00 PDT; 10:00 MDT; 11:00 CDT; 06:00 HST; 08:00 AKDT; 09:00 Arizona; 16:00 GMT)
Speaker(s):
KIMBERLY L. METRIS, PhD, CFI, FAASTeam Rep
Brief Description:

Pilots of all certificate levels are prone to destabilized approach and landing accidents. Most General Aviation (GA) approach and landing accidents occur during the day, and half occur in visual meteorological conditions (VMC). It is imperative that pilots accurately assess the risk associated with each flight, reassess risk en route, and commit to alternate plans prior to a state of emergency.

In this webinar, we will review data about accidents in the approach and landing phase of flight and environmental and human factors related to a destabilized approach. Further, we will cover components of (and threats to) a stabilized approach and landing.  A safe and precise landing is typically preceded by a stabilized approach, so we will discuss best practices to learn how to judge when to continue to landing and when to go-around and abort/reject a landing, and ultimately reduce general aviation accidents.

This webinar will be presented by Kimberly Metris, PhD, CFI, skydive pilot and tailwheel aircraft owner.
