Most pilots fly at airports with generous runways and few obstructions. However, if you fly into smaller airports with shorter runways, surrounding terrain, or obstructions, are you certain your airplane has adequate performance to safely negotiate these hazards? Your airplane may have published takeoff, landing, and climb values, but do you know for certain that you airplane will actually achieve those book values? In other words, Can Your Airplane Really Perform?
The objective of this workshop is to familiarize pilots with differences between book values and actual performance for their specific airplane. During the seminar, pilots will calculate takeoff and landing distances plus climb gradient for their aircraft, using conditions existing on the day of the event. Pilots will have an opportunity to compare their actual takeoff and landing distances to calculated distances.
A thorough knowledge of aircraft performance is essential to safe operations, especially at airports constrained by trees, terrain, or other obstructions. Don't guess -- know before you go!
This is a hands-on workshop. Bring your airplane documents (POH, W&B), calculator, or favorite iOS/Android app to calculate density altitude, takeoff and landing distances, climb performance, etc. We will have a lively time comparing results!
This event is held in conjunction with the Northeast Comanche Fly-In at Parlin Field. Thanks to Recycled Pilots for the use of their hangar.
Covid-19 Statement
Covid safety recommendations are complex, dynamic, and confusing. Each individual has their own unique personal health history that influences their decision-making. Their health history, as well as yours, is none of our business. So here's the deal: You are pilot-in-command of your own health and safety. As PIC of your health, you also have a responsibility to act in a way that contributes to the overall safety of the seminar airspace. We hope you will act responsibly and remain outside the seminar airspace if you have an active case of Covid-19, currently have symptoms of Covid-19, or have been in close contact with a person within a few days prior to the seminar and that person either had at the time or has since developed an active case of Covid-19. However, we can't guarantee your colleagues and neighbors will act responsibly. Even with the best intentions, situations are dynamic. Information is sometimes delayed, and people make mistakes.
The seminar will be held in a hangar, with the best airflow and widest spacing we can reasonably manage. Most, but not all, pilots at Parlin Field have been fully vaccinated. If you feel safe enough without a face mask, that's fine. If you feel safer or feel the safety of the seminar airspace is better served if you wear a mask, that's fine too. If you arrive and find the environment uncomfortable, it's okay to leave. The seminar airspace is a non-judgement area.
With the foregoing caveats in mind, if you choose to attend, we look forward to seeing you. If you're not yet ready to attend this in-person seminar, we understand and look forward to seeing you the next time!
