A mid-air collision can occur anywhere at anytime. As the aircraft population grows around a certain point, be that an airport, navigation fix or scenic sight on the ground, the chance of coming too close to another aircraft grows. This is especially true when you are giving or receiving flight instruction and both of you are looking at something in the cockpit. When is the last time you drove your car down the interstate and saw everyone driving the posted speed limit, changing lanes with the use of turn signals and following one car length for every 10 mph of speed? When is the last time you flew into a busy non-towered airport and everyone entered the traffic pattern on the 45 entry leg, used the radio to briefly announce the entry, downwind, base and final? Utopia? This is exactly why we have to review basics, no matter what the certificate level or the hours in the logbook reflect. Ever flown in Canada, or another country? Do their procedures work well in the U.S.? Come and join the discussion on how to fly safer when there is no tower to control the flow of traffic.
