FAAST Blast — Week of June 29 – July 05, 2015
Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

FAA Requests Comments on Glider Transponder Requirements

The FAA is requesting comments on the removal of the current exception for gliders from the transponder requirement for aircraft in the National Airspace System (NAS). This is part of an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) that is being conducted in response to recommendations from members of Congress and the NTSB. For more information on the ANPRM or how to comment see: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2015-06-16/pdf/2015-14818.pdf

FAA Issues NPRM to Address Use of ATDs in Instrument Training

The FAA has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to address the use of Aviation Training Devices (ATD) for aeronautical experience requirements for an instrument rating. Prior to the 2009 revision of Part 61 FAA had allowed some training devices to credit up 20 hours of aeronautical experience via Letters of Authorization (LOA). Following the 2009 revision the terms Basic Aviation Training Device (BATD) and Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) were included into the regulation and the amount of time that could be credited toward the aeronautical experience requirements for an instrument rating was limited to 10 hours for both BATDs and AATDs.
The FAA is proposing that AATDs be allowed up to 20 hours of credit while BATDs would still be allowed 10 hours of credit. In light of this difference, pilots must include the type and identification of any ATD used for credit to aeronautical experience requirements for an instrument rating. Are You in Your Right Mind for a Journey?

In the latest FAA Safety Briefing magazine (July/August 2015) Editor Susan Parson explores the idea of cultivating the right mindset for traveling via GA in her article “It’s About the Journey.” Parson examines the reasons why traveling in your own airplane is about more than just getting from point A to point B and why it’s important to understand the limitations of GA. Check out the article here: www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing.

Are You Ready for a Surprise?

This month, the FAASTeam is focusing on managing unexpected events which, in turn, can prevent loss of control accidents. Training and preparation can help pilots manage the “startle response” and effectively cope with unexpected events. For more information: www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing.
