Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

FAA Issues Alert for Transponder Use

On May 19, the FAA issued a Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) that advises all operators and pilots of the need to ensure that transponders are in the altitude reporting mode whenever their aircraft is on an airport movement area at all airports. Runway safety systems, such as Airport Surface Detection Equipment-Model X (ASDE-X), use data from surface movement radar and aircraft transponders to obtain accurate aircraft and vehicle locations, thereby increasing airport surface safety and efficiency.
Pilots should ensure their checklists reference transponders in the appropriate places and consult their aircraft’s flight manual to determine the specific transponder position to enable altitude reporting. For more information, you can read the full SAFO here: http://go.usa.gov/3XGxA.

See and Be Seen; NTSB Issues Alert on Maintaining Separation
A recent Safety Alert from the National Safety Transportation Board (See and Be Seen: Your Life Depends On It) highlights the importance of collision avoidance techniques when flying. The Alert points out that accidents have occurred in which pilots operating near one another did not maintain adequate visual lookout and failed to see and avoid the other aircraft. The Alert looks at some recent related accidents and provides a host of helpful tips and references for pilots to find out more on the subject. You can check it out here: http://go.usa.gov/3XGUA.

Have ADS-B Questions? Get Answers Here
Starting in 2020, aircraft must be equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out to fly in most controlled airspace. Will you need to equip? It depends on where you fly. For more on how you should equip your aircraft, what equipment has been FAA certified, and what the benefits of ADS-B Out and ADS-B In are, go to www.faa.gov/go/equipADSB. If you’re at AirVenture this July, you can also stop by the FAA Center and get an ADS-B check-up on equipment you already have.

More Power, Captain!
One thing most pilots almost always want is more power. In his article “The Bigger Bang Theory,” FAA Safety Briefing editor James Williams examines how engines can produce more power. Specifically, the article explains how supercharging and turbocharging are used in aircraft to improve power and add capability. The article also provides some depth on how these systems work and what pilots need to know in order to use them correctly.
