Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

Rotorcraft Safety Takes Center Stage at FAA-Hosted Conference

In an effort to explore ways to improve rotorcraft flight safety, the FAA’s Rotorcraft Directorate will host a three-day safety forum April 21-23, 2015, at the Hurst Conference Center, just outside of Fort Worth, Texas. The free event will be geared toward pilots, mechanics, flight safety officers and others associated with personal/private, instructional/training, and aerial application rotorcraft. The event will include programs, lectures, and training sessions, several of which are also WINGS/AMT credit eligible.
Day one will include presentations by NTSB member Robert Sumwalt, survivors of helicopter accidents or near-accidents, and an FAA-led discussion on fatal helicopter accident patterns. Breakout sessions during the event will cover autorotations, health and risk assessments, NextGen technology installation, human factors in maintenance, supplemental type certificates, and a planned aviation data exchange tool. The conference will conclude with an “International Day” that will include presentations from the European Aviation Safety Agency, Transport Canada Civil Aviation, industry groups and the FAA. There will also be a job fair onsite along with rooms for meetings and networking.

Cloud Spotting

Do you know what type of cloud the FAA recommends keeping a 20 mile distance from? Or what the “good IFR” clouds are? Use our handy cloud spotting chart from the current issue of the FAA Safety Briefing magazine, which can be downloaded from http://1.usa.gov/1MRD5wv.

Managing a Crew of Just You
There is no one right answer in aeronautical decision-making. Each pilot is expected to analyze each situation in light of experience level, personal minimums, and current physical and mental readiness, and make his or her own decision. That’s where single-pilot resource management (SRM) comes into play. Get the fact sheet about SRM and the “5P” approach at http://1.usa.gov/1Gu5fvz.
