Biweekly FAA Safety Briefing News Update

Comment Period Open for Hangar Policy Draft
On July 22, 2014, the FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Policy for the non-aeronautical use of airport hangars which clarifies compliance requirements for airport sponsors, airport managers, airport tenants, state aviation officials, and FAA compliance staff. To view the draft policy, go to https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2014/07/22/2014-17031/policy-on-the-non-aeronautical-use-of-airport-hangars. The comment period will remain open until September 05, 2014.

SAIB Highlights IAPs with No Published Vertical Descent Angles
The FAA issued Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) HQ-14-25 on Aug. 26, 2014, that warns of concerns with some flight management systems (FMS) and GPS navigation equipment when a “0” zero is coded to communicate that no vertical descent angle is published on an instrument approach procedure (IAP). As a result, some systems might assume the zero is invalid and will default to a three degree angle, or they may reject the IAP, making it unavailable to select. Other anomalies are depicted in the SAIB.
The FAA recommends pilots carefully review IAPs and choose ones not affected by this concern, as well as contact their navigation equipment manufacturer to see if their equipment and software load may be adversely affected.  For more information, you can reference the SAIB here: http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgSAIB.nsf/MainFrame?OpenFrameSet

Don’t Make Me Turn This Thing Around!
Pilots may feel more pressure to get to their destination early or to ensure the flight is as smooth and “fun” as possible especially when the passengers are loved ones. To combat this undue stress, which can adversely affect the pilot’s aeronautical decision making, everyone on board needs to exercise a little “excitement management” and establish realistic expectations about the flight.
