The purpose of this notice reminding pilots to close/cancel their IFR flight plan when Santa Monica, (SMO) Tower is closed is to maintain safe and efficient flight operations between SMO and Los Angeles International Airports, (LAX). The timely cancellation of the IFR flight plan into Santa Monica Tower when closed ensures that other pilots arriving SMO Airport will not incur in-flight delays and assists in minimizing any potential flight operation risks and/or delays into and out of LAX. Closing your IFR flight plan assures air traffic controllers that you have landed safely or are able to land safely with the runway environment in sight. In keeping the national airspace system safe and efficient, closing/cancelling your IFR flight plan plays a crucial part. Thank you.
