Title:
Beyond the Briefing: What You Should Teach your Flying Companions
Topic:
A flight plan for pilots to teach non-pilot flying companions skills to help alleviate common fears
Date and Time:
Saturday, August 29, 2015, starting at 10:00 Mountain Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
William Dubois, Author and Pilot; Susan Larson and other members of the Rio Grande Norte 99s
Brief Description:
Using a checklist-themed approach, this seminar provides a short pilot-perspective version of the well-regarded daylong Flying Companion Seminars taught by the Ninety-Nines throughout the country. These teach non-pilot flying companions basic airmanship and communications skills needed to deal with an incapacitated-pilot emergency. Topics include: How non-pilot flying companions are defined, some commonly held fears, and how simple training by pilots can alleviate these fears and increase safety. We’ll focus on developing strategies that will allow pilots at any certificate level to teach their flying companions how to control the aircraft in an emergency, and how to interpret and operate key cockpit systems such as communication radios and transponders. Pilots will gain tools necessary to create customized plane-specific checklists both for themselves and their flying companions to use as a part of routine flight operations.
