Title:
The Day The Music Died
Topic:
Disorientation and loss of situational awareness
Date and Time:
Wednesday, September 21, 2011, starting at 19:00 Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Fred Harms
Brief Description:
On February 3, 1959, singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the "Big Bopper", died in a crash at Clear Lake, Iowa.  That event was featured in Don McLean's 1971 song American Pie.  The accident was blamed on pilot error - disorientation, flight into terrain.  52 years since that accident, spatial disorientation has continued to be a "killer".  The NTSB identified it as a factor in John F. Kennedy's plane crash.  This program will review the causes of spatial disorientation and some of the things we can do to mitigate the risks of it.
