Additional Event Information & Acknowledgement of Industry Sponsor(s):
Don't miss this full day of aviation activities at the Franklin County Airport (LHZ). Pilots are invited to bring their non-flying friends and significant others to participate in the exclusive introductory aviation programs. Special emphasis will be made to encourage women to get involved in aviation.
Why Participate in WINGs?
- The most significant incentive to participating pilots is the added level of safety and professionalism that is obtained through adoption of a consistent recurrent training program.
- Aviation Insurance companies also provide a discount on premiums for participation in WINGs. (Avemco 10%)
- Satisfactory completion of ANY phase of WINGs meets the requirements specified in 14 CFR 61.56(e) and will count as your flight review.
The WINGs Pilot Proficiency Day begins at 9 AM with an opportunity for pilots to earn their WINGs in the program. Airmen will be provided a rare opportunity to attend three classes, morning or afternoon, that will satisfy all required Knowledge Credits for the WINGs Program. In addition, airmen can fly with a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) and accomplish the required Flight activities for a BASIC Level in the WINGs Program. By the end of the day, participating pilots can accomplish all Knowledge and Flight activities and earn their WINGs. Successful completion of the WINGs training will yield them a "fresh flight review" (BFR).
Concurrently, the non-pilot promotional program titled "You Can Fly Too" (free admission) begins at 9 AM with an introduction to flying presentation. Introductory flights commence after lunch. For more information, click here.
The schedule of events appears below. Attendees must sign the registration sheet at each individual seminar for WINGs credit. To earn the required knowledge credits towards a WINGs Phase at the event, be sure to attend (and sign in) to: the Aeronautical Decision Making seminar, the Runway Safety Seminar, and the Flight to the Bahamas Made Easy seminar. There are two opportunities to attend as each of the three seminars will be presented in the morning and in the afternoon. This will provide flexibility to the flight portion of your WINGs Day.
WINGs Seminars
A WINGs Phase includes both flight and ground portions. Flight instruction will be provided by volunteer FAA certified flight instructors. For aircraft rental and flight instruction scheduling, contact Poor Boys Aviation at 919-497-5511. Flight instruction will be concurrent with the ground events below, which repeat to allow you flexibility in scheduling.
A WINGS Program Media Booth will be positioned in the hangar with FAA Safety Team members available to answer any questions you may have about the WINGs Program.
9:00 AM or 1:00 PM: Flying in the Danger Zone (Runway Safety). Operations at or near an airport, both towered and non-towered, can be "hazardous to your health". Did you know that 90% of all mid-air collisions occur within 10 miles of an airport and over 40% of all aircraft accidents occur during takeoffs and landings? At this seminar you will learn new ATC procedures, tips on non-towered airport operations, how to mitigate mid-air collisions, and how to avoid the near fatal mistakes that the pros sometimes make. This seminar counts for a Knowledge 2 credit. Presented by Barbara Harris-Para, CFI
10:00 AM or 2:00 PM: Don't Be the First One at the Accident Scene: Aeronautical Decision Making. Every pilot begins a flight thinking that a safe arrival is a sure bet. But sometimes we are guilty of making a bad decision about the weather, our flight skills, the airworthiness of the aircraft, or our physical well being. The truth is that sooner or later making a bad decision may be our last decision. Learn how professionals make the right decisions every time. Find out when it's best to say "No, I'm driving", or Let's fly there tomorrow". This seminar counts for Knowledge 1 credit. Presented by Cindy Carter, professional CFI.
11:00AM or 3:00 PM: Flying to the Bahamas Made Easy. Short range oceanic navigation is both thrilling and challenging. Learn how to prepare and what precautions to take before venturing out to the Bahamas. Presented by Cameron King, CFI.
