Title:
Wake Turbulence “The Invisible Threat”
Topic:
Safely negotiating Wake Turbulence
Speaker(s):
Rafael Sierra, CFI, CFII
Brief Description:
The introduction of the Airbus A380 Super Heavy has created some potentially serious wake turbulence issues. Aircraft wake turbulence hazards and encounters, in and around the Los Angeles Class B area have been increased by the introduction of the Airbus A380 Super Heavy. Rafael will help us understand the wake turbulence accident history and this new potential risk and how it impacts the already challenging aircraft mix we deal with daily.

The Airbus A380-800, with a maximum take-off mass of 1.25 million pounds, is the largest passenger aircraft ever to enter into revenue service. The aircraft is in the HEAVY wake turbulence category and the Procedures for Air Navigation Services — Air Traffic Management (PANS-ATM, Doc 4444) apply. However, as vortices generated by the A380-800 are more substantial than for other aircraft in the HEAVY wake turbulence category, this guidance recommends an increase in relation to the wake turbulence separation minima. This is intended to ensure that aircraft operating near an A380-800 do not encounter wake vortices of a greater magnitude than are generated by other Aircraft.
