Flying is a great privilege and also a responsibility. Recent high profile accidents at non-towered fields have put all pilots in the media spotlight as perhaps "less than safe." Most media outlets shockingly report "no control tower was in operation" though only 5% of airfields in the US are equipped with control towers. As pilots, we have a greater responsibility to fly with safety and dicipline when no tower is directing the flow of traffic. Additionally, since 94% of US airports have runways 3,000 ft or shorter, your piloting skills should include safe procedures for operating in the traffic pattern and landing safely at these smaller airports.
This seminar will provide guidance for non-towered operations and solicit your ideas on creating accident free pattern procedures. We will discuss safe taxiing, collision avoidance (on the ground and airborne), correct radio phaseology, as well as piloting technique to create safe maneuvering flight and take-offs and landings. Just being able to "walk away" is not a high enough standard! Your presenter learned to fly 35 years ago at a small, non-towered field and in addition to pilot examining, has taught over 9,000 hours in the pattern!).
