Title:
Non-Towered Airport Operations and the New Wings Pilot Proficiency Program
Topic:
Learn traffic pattern procedures that mix slow and fast aircraft. Important info on the New Wings Program.
Date and Time:
Tuesday, November 6, 2007, starting at 18:30 Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Bob Sutherlin (FAA)
Brief Description:
Nontowered airports—those not served by an operating air traffic control (ATC) tower—are much more common than towered fields. There are approximately 13,000 airports in the US that are nontowered, compared to approximately 500 that have towers. Safe operations can be conducted because pilots put safety first and use recommended procedures. Most mid air collisions occur within 10 miles of an airport. Find out how NOT to become a statistic by attending this seminar and participating in the New Wings Program; learn how easy it is to get involved in aviation safety.

Nontowered airports—those not served by an operating air traffic control (ATC) tower—are much more common than towered fields. There are approximately 13,000 airports in the US that are nontowered, compared to approximately 500 that have towers. Millions of safe operations in all types of aircraft are conducted at nontowered airports in a variety of weather conditions. The process works because pilots put safety first and use recommended procedures. Most mid air collisions occur within 10 miles of an airport. Find out how NOT to become a statistic by attending this seminar and participating in the New Wings Program; learn how easy it is to get involved in aviation safety.

Regulations and procedures can’t cover every conceivable situation,  and that's why the FAA has wisely avoided imposing rigid operating regulations at nontowered airports. What works at one airport may not work at the next. Some airports have special operating rules due to obstacles or hazards, while other rules may promote a smooth and efficient flow of traffic or keep aircraft from overflying unsympathetic airport neighbors. Right-of-way rules, and nontowered airport traffic patterns and procedures, exist to prevent collisions in the air and on the ground. Don't miss this opportunity to become a safer pilot!
