Title:
NAFI - Glider Concepts for Powered Flight Training
Topic:
Learn How Soaring Helps Develop A Unique Understanding Of Energy Management, Situational Awareness, Airmanship, ADM And More
Date and Time:
Wednesday, October 19, 2022, starting at 19:00 Central Daylight Time (17:00 PDT; 18:00 MDT; 20:00 EDT; 14:00 HST; 16:00 AKDT; 17:00 Arizona; Thursday, October 20, 2022 00:00 GMT)
Speaker(s):
Scott Manley, Karen Kalishek
Brief Description:

As aircraft pilots, we are all subject to the same physical laws, we operate in the same natural environment, and to varying degrees, we all depend on the same knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes.

That said, in absence of thrust, soaring pilots by necessity tend to develop a deeper, more extensive, and sometimes unique understanding of some important flight-related concepts and skills, including airmanship, energy management, situational awareness, aeronautical decision making, etc.

As purveyors of these concepts and skills, it would seem this additional perspective would benefit us, and by extension benefit our clients.  This presentation seeks that end.

ELIXIR AIRCRAFT - SPONSOR

www.elixir-aircraft.com

Elixir Aircraft was created on the idea of designing a new generation part 23 aircraft that meets the challenges of tomorrow's light aviation. Since 2015, Elixir Aircraft has pursued a simple objective: to offer more versatile, safer, and more economical aircraft by providing relevant, modern, and innovative answers to the recurring problems encountered by light aviation.

Elixir Aircraft is born from a basic observation: complexity is the main source of failures (technical or human) in today's aviation. Exacerbated by an aging aircraft fleet, this complexity is also very expensive in terms of operating costs (fuel & maintenance). To respond to this, Elixir Aircraft has introduced the OneShot carbon process in the design of its aircraft, a technology derived from competitive sailing, allowing it to greatly simplify the structure. More simplicity means fewer areas of failure, therefore, safer; this significantly reduces operating costs (40$/h estimated in fuel and maintenance).

In continuous growth since its creation, Elixir Aircraft now employs more than 90 employees on 2 sites in La Rochelle, France.

SCOTT MANLEY - PRESENTER

Scott Manley has an undergraduate degree in secondary education and more than 50 years of teaching experience.  He provides year-round simulation-based flight instruction at-a-distance (Condor/Skype) to glider rating candidates nationwide, and consultation services to flight training organizations and individuals interested in adopting this paradigm.

He holds Certificated Flight Instructor privileges for the glider category.  The back of his pilot certificate reads Commercial pilot: airplane single-engine land & sea; instrument airplane; glider.

KAREN KALISHEK - HOST

Karen is the NAFI Board Chair, a Designated Pilot Examiner, three time NAFI Master Instructor, CFI, CFII, MEI, CFI-G, AGI, IGI, FAA Gold Seal Instructor and FAASTeam Lead Representative. She teaches in a range of aircraft and enjoys flying her own RV6. Karen is a Major in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), serves as a member of the WINGS Industry Network, contributes to the FAA Surface Safety Group, is an FAA Safety Team Lead Representative, and is active in several other aviation organizations.

Karen is the 2019 National FAASTeam Representative of the year. She became active in aviation after success as a senior VP in the banking sector, as a graduate school professor, and as president of her own international consulting business.
